The aim: to validate the accuracy of measurements via inertial sensors in a telerehabilitation scheme
5 July 2023 – Under the title «Evaluation of upper body and lower limbs kinematics through an IMU-based medical system: a comparative study with the optoelectronic system», «Sensors» published the scientific article resulting from the collaboration between Euleria Health and the team of Professor Veronica Cimolin -Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano.
The study behind the article saw the team measure specific motor tasks through the inertial sensor system integrated in Euleria Health’s telerehabilitation medical device. All of the data collected with the inertial sensor system were compared with those collected in parallel by the optoelectronic system, assumed to be the gold standard for human motion analysis.
Sensors: a scientific process
From the abstract: ‘Data were collected simultaneously with the two systems (inertial sensor and optoelectronic, ed.) on a series of trunk and lower limb exercises performed by 21 healthy participants’.
Again: «In addition, the sensitivity of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) based system to its possible uncorrect positioning was assessed. The root mean square error (RMSE) was used to explore the differences between the results of the two systems in terms of range of motion (ROM), and their concordance was assessed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC) and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (CCC)».
The results
Also from the abstract: «’The analysis of the collected data showed that the IMU-based system was able to assess upper body and lower limb kinematics with an average error of less than 5 overall’».
«The results of this study support the application of the device for rehabilitation in unsupervised settings, thus providing reliable data to remotely monitor the progress of the rehabilitation process and the alteration of the patient’s motor function».

Euleria Health’s telerehabilitation system
Euleria Health’s technical effectiveness is made possible by its own software as medical devices and inertial sensor technology that measures with high accuracy the movements performed by the patient. The practitioner then obtains objective and detailed information on the patient’s activities, in the clinic and at home.
The data recorded by the sensors are processed and provided in real time to the patient in the form of audio-visual biofeedback, which can motivate them and give them an awareness of the correct execution of the exercise.
Enabling movement professionals and patients to enjoy the benefits of telerehabilitation is also part of the social impact objectives that Euleria Health, as a Benefit Society, is committed to every day.
