REACTS: the project that is changing cardiac telerehabilitation

Il Progetto REACTS: Innovazione nella Teleriabilitazione Cardiaca a cura di Euleria Health e Dedalus
Let's learn more about REACTS, the project that is changing cardiac telerehabilitation for patients, physical therapists, and cardiologists, in and out of the nursing home

Among the sectors of our healthcare system, rehabilitation produces a constant demand for technological innovation. Together with Dedalus, Euleria Health has created REACTS, the solution that combines advanced technologies and a multidisciplinary approach for in-clinic rehabilitation and subsequent telerehabilitation of patients with heart failure and various other cardiological conditions.

REACTS (Respiratory And Cardiac Telerehabilitation integrated home Services) combines advanced technology and a multidisciplinary approach to ensure effective, accessible, and sustainable treatment, in which cardiac telerehabilitation is simultaneously targeting and generating benefits for all stakeholders along the entire care pathway.

A complete system for cardiology telerehabilitation

The REACTS project, developed as part of a collaboration between Euleria Health and Dedalus and funded by the Autonomous Province of Trento | APIAE under Provincial Law 6/99 “Aid to Enterprises for Research and Development,” has as its main objective the improvement of rehabilitation management through digital tools. Its main components include:

  1. EMR-R Dedalus, a platform certified as a Class IIb medical device, serves as an electronic medical record to support all phases of the rehabilitation pathway, from intake to evaluation and monitoring.
  2. euleria home, the Class IIa medical device manufactured and distributed by Euleria Health, which can administer and monitor therapeutic exercises at home through customizable and safe solutions.

This integrated system not only facilitates communication between patients and physicians, but also enables optimal management of clinical data, facilitating more accurate and personalized treatment decisions.

REACTS as told by project managers Valentina D’Angeli and Francesco Guzzonato

Why is cardiac telerehabilitation critical to the health care system?

Heart failure is a major cause of mortality in developed countries, with a high economic and social impact. In Italy, for example, about 2.4 percent of the healthcare budget is devoted to the management of this condition. Despite medical advances, the rate of hospitalizations and post-hospitalization relapses remain high.

Cardiology telerehabilitation, as also shown by recent surveys by the National Institute of Health, can be as effective as traditional in-clinic rehabilitation, with additional socioeconomic benefits such as improved quality of life for patients and their caregivers.

The benefits for patients, cardiologists, physiatrists, and exercise professionals

Thus, the solution proposed by the REACTS project offers numerous advantages:

For patients:

  • Safety through continuous monitoring of vital parameters.
  • Accessibility, with personalized rehabilitation programs usable anywhere.
  • Improved adherence to therapy through direct patient involvement in the care pathway.

For cardiologists, physiatrists, physical therapists, and kinesiologists:

  • Remote monitoring of patient progress.
  • Detailed and objective analysis of clinical data.
  • Optimal personalization of therapeutic programs.

Cutting-edge technology: the REACTS kit

The technological heart of the project is the REACTS Kit, which includes:

  • Tablets and smartphones with preinstalled apps for exercise management and activity tracking.
  • Polar H10 heart rate monitor for heart rate monitoring.
  • Inertial sensor to track movements during aerobic activity.
  • Customized accessories, such as elastic bands for correct positioning of sensors.

With these tools, the patient can perform exercises safely, receiving real-time feedback and ensuring constant monitoring by the practitioner.

Clinical study at the Eremo Nursing Home in Arco

The validity of the REACTS project is supported by an ongoing clinical study at the Nursing Home Eremo di Arco (TN). The study involves the enrollment of 40 patients with cardiac issues who have completed phase II rehabilitation. Preliminary results, reviewed by FBK, show excellent adherence to the protocol and significant progress in patients in the experimental group. A further trial will soon involve professionals and patients from Maria Cecilia Hospital in Cotignola (RA), belonging to the GVM Care&Research group.

A present future of innovation for telerehabilitation

Thus, the REACTS project not only aims to improve rehabilitation management, but also aims to redefine the very concept of cardiology care. With a flexible and customizable system, it can be delivered to a high number of patients, thereby optimizing healthcare resources and improving clinical outcomes.
